Topher's Tales - Antarctica 2001
WINTER ISLAND
This Island was part of the early British research into the Atlantic. The British base here operated on and off from 1947 to 1960. In 1954, permanent operations were relocated to nearby Marina Point, to what is now Vernadsky Base.
The original station house on Winter Island, "Wordie Hut", was an 18ft square building built by the original Graham Land Expedition in 1935-36. Subsequently, an office, stores and a generator shed were added. At both entrances to the island, small wooden signs still stand, proclaiming "British Crown Land", antiques from the age before the Antarctic Treaty.
