VERNADSKY BASE

This is the Ukranian Antarctic Research Centre's base in the Argentine Islands. The base started out in1947 as a British Base under the control of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). From 1947 to 1954 the base occupied neighboring Winter Island. In 1954 it moved to its current home on Marina Point,Galindez Island.

In 1962, the FIDS program was renamed as British Antarctic Survey (BAS). In 1977 the base was renamed Farady. British BAS scientists were the ones who discovered the ozone hole in 1985 at this base.

In 1996 the base was turned over from the British to the Ukranians. We visited on February 6, 2001, which was the fifth anniversary of Ukranian research at the base.

Meteorologist Slavik Skrypnik and the 5th anniversary T-shirt. If you come this far, you HAVE to get the t-shirt!
The Virgin of Antarctica, an icon painted by Slavik, blessed at the Russian Orthodox Church in Odessa, Ukraine. Odessa's only 15,010 km away! No wonder these brave souls only go home once a year.

Notice the lack of anything due South!

The world famous Faraday bar.
