Topher's Tales - Antarctica 2001

DECEPTION ISLAND

Deception Island is an old whaling base, but it is also an active volcano, last erupting around 1970. As you sail into the caldera through Neptune's Bellows, towering basalt cliffs stick up on your right. At Pendulum Cove, we went swimming in the lava warmed seawater. We also took a long hike to Baily Head penguin rookery, where 1/2 million penguins make there home.
